Why quotes fall below your floor

A quote can look fine at "$75 an hour" and still pay you $48 once the real costs come out.

    Discounts and fees

A 10% discount plus 3% card fees takes 13% off before you start. Marketplaces can take 10–20%.

    Hours you didn't price

Revisions, calls and email rarely make it into the estimate, but you still work them.

    No buffer

Projects often run past the first estimate. A buffer keeps the overrun from coming out of your rate.

    FAQ

What's a "floor" or minimum rate?

It's the lowest hourly rate that covers your take-home goal, taxes and business costs over the hours you can realistically bill. Below it, you're losing money on the work, even if the quote looks fine.

    Is it really free?

Yes. Everything on this page is free, with no account, no limits and no email required.

    Do you store my numbers?

No. The math runs in your browser. Your last inputs are saved only in your own browser, so they're there next time. A simple counter image counts page views (no cookies, no personal data).

How is the floor worked out?

(Take-home goal ÷ (1 − tax rate) + yearly costs) ÷ (working weeks × hours per week × billable share). It's the same math as our free Rate Calculator.

    Does this replace an accountant?

No. It's a quick sanity check. Tax rules vary, so check the details for where you live.
